Venerable Dorotheus the Hermit of Egypt

Commemorated on September 16

Dorotheus was an Egyptian hermit of the fourth century. He laboured in asceticism for sixty full years in one cell in the Thebaid. His distinguished himself by an unusual love of labor and by miracle-working. During the day he built cells for the new monks, and at night he wove mats, never interrupting his prayer and psalmody.

Pray for us great ascetic Dorotheus!

Troparion — Tone 8

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile, / and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance. / By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe! / O our holy father Dorotheus, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!
