Saint Loukinos (Lucian) of Antioch

Commemorated on October 15

Born in 235 he lived with his parents in Syria. At only the age of twelve, Saint Loukianos lost both his mother and father leaving him orphaned. With an open heart, he gave all of his belongings and what his parents left him to the poor. Then he traveled to an upper city of Mesopotamia, Edessa.

There he sought an instructor of the faith. Macarius the confessor had a school where he taught theology of the Orthodox faith. He was deeply interested and read many books, including Holy scripture. He was also gifted with a desire for ascetic life. Due to his hard work and steadfast zeal, he was made a priest.

Then traveling to Antioch, after converting many Jews and idol worshippers to Christ, he opened a theology school. There he taught many others how to understand the Bible as well as lead a pious life. He also corrected the first 5 books of the bible, as they had been falsely translated to Greek by heretics. He then hid a correction in the wall where it was later found roughly 30 years later.

Eventually captured during Diocletian’s rule, he was imprisoned. There he continued teaching and shared the faith with those who were also in jail.

After suffering many torments and weak from starving he was nearing death. His final wish was to partake of communion one more time before dying. Christians who visited him knew of his wish and brought to him bread and wine to be concecrated. He was chained with heavy weights and laid on a uncomfortable bed. There he offered the communuion to the other Christians in the cell. The following day Loukanios reposed, right after professing his Christian faith three times. The guards then threw his body into the sea but one month later, by the grace of God, dolphins returned it to shore. Other Christians found his body upon the sand and buried it properly.

Although he died on Janurary 7, this conflicted with the Synaxis of holy St. John the Baptist, so Loukanois commemoration was moved to October 15.
