Saint Cosmas and Damian of Arabia

Commemorated on October 17

Living in Arabia the two brothers, Cosmas and Damian, worked as doctors.

They were blessed with knowledge of Christ. Faithfully believing in him, they had great desire to share the faith with others, and traveled all through towns and villages sharing the word of God while tending to the sickly.

They did not ask for pay, nor would they accept it. They were traveling as healers as well as missionaries.

Eventually, idol worshippers found them and discovered their purpose. They took them to Lysias, governor of Cilicia. They were commanded to renounce Christianity and worship the idols. When they refused, Lysius ordered that the saints were beaten mercilessly and then drowned in the ocean.

An angel of the Lord saved them from death in the sea, and placed them upon the shore.

When the pagans discovered them, they were beheaded for the sake of Christ, alongside three other martyrs ; Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius.
