Holy Apostle Philip of the 70

Commemorated on October 11

~80 AD

Holy Apostle Philip of the 70 lived during the early days of the Church. He was made a deacon by the twelve apostles alongside 6 others who were also appointed as deacons. Their main task was to care for the orphans, widows or those who were sickly or in need.

Soon after, the persecution of Christians began in Jerusalem.  The Apostle Philip, left, and went to Samaria where he spread the true word of God.  He had many who converted and were baptized.

By God’s command, he began journeying down the road that led from Jerusalem to Gaza. It was on this path that he met the Empress of Ethiopia. Through his preaching he was able to convert her as well which led to the spread of Orthodoxy in Africa.

Among the empress, he also helped to convert and baptize the magician Simon from Acts.

Apostle Phillip did not rest his mission to spread Orthodoxy and traveled through Palestine and Asia Minor. There too he was able to baptize many and lead them to the true God. He lived a long and full life and reposed peacefully.
